Nicaragua

Nicaragua is situated between Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica, in the Central America isthmus. It is the second poorest country of Latin America. A strong separation exists between the central/pacific area, colonised by the Spanish and with mestizos population, and the Caribbean, colonised by the English.  The majority of the population live in the first area, where most of the country resources can also be found. The second area maintains indigenous and afro-caribbean minorities (creoles) and biodiversity conservation areas.  Currently these two areas on the Atlantic Coast have been given a Statute of Autonomy.

Terra Nuova has worked in the fields of children’s rights, education, indigenous populations rights and gender equity. In the 80’s, it supported the efforts of the Sandinist Government to ensure education for all. With the help of the Ministry of Education it promoted some educational services for the integration of disabled children.

In the 90’s it has supported the Atlantic Coast regions in their efforts to obtain autonomy, sustaining the Bilingual Intercultural Education Programme and the Regional Autonomous Educative System for the populations of  the Caribbean Coast.
Terra Nuova offered its support to reinforce the networks for the promotion of children rights and the farmer and indigenous organisations in the sustainable management of the territory and the promotion of sustainable productive initiatives.
