Perù

Peru is a country four times bigger than Italy with a population of about 26 million inhabitants. Its numerous natural resources, its diverse ecosystems, its remarkable archaeological and cultural patrimony contrast with its marked social inequality, its tormented history, its fragile democracy.

Since the beginning of the 80’s Terra Nuova has been involved in the realisation of projects in favour of  the indigenous populations of Amazonia with special attention to the indigenous health systems and the diverse cultural approaches in the health sector. Successively a training project for teachers and the preparation of a syllabus of bilingual intercultural education was initiated in the Peruvian Amazonia: the Peruvian Ministry of Education followed this example and today this has become a public policy.

These two areas of work have represented, and continue to represent an area of important presence of Terra Nuova, one that has resulted in a significant legacy of experience. As a result, several new initiatives have been developed in other fields: the preservation of the genetic patrimony available to the “sierra” farmers; the promotion of womens’ role through the valorisation of knowledge (work with “parteras”); the active management of the environment.
