Somalia/Somaliland

Somalia is mainly formed by arid lands and its economy is largely based on nomadic sheep farming. After the collapse of the regime of Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia has been deprived of a central government and was disintegrated in various regions more or less autonomous, ruled by different clans which control each limited area of the territory, even if these clan are linked having language, culture and religion in common. The North-Western area, the Somaliland, declared unilaterally its own independence from the rest of the country and formed a government not officially recognised by the international community. Internal fights are recurring and make the country highly dangerous. For this reason Terra Nuova, together with the embassies and other international organisations working in Somalia, has its office in Nairobi, Kenya.

In Somalia Terra Nuova works since 1994, and its intervention is focused on the development of cattle breeding. Its main activities are: the implementation of training programs for veterinarians, the support of education in the veterinary sector with the collaboration of academic institutions; organisation and monitoring of vaccination campaigns and check up of the most common cattle’s diseases.
